GALENA - Harvey Hurtt Camp, 99, of Galena died July 16, 2017 in Season's Hospice at Christiana Hospital.
Mr. Camp was born on Nov. 26, 1917 in Cecilton, son of the late Emory H. and Elva H. Price Camp. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving 15 months with nine months in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, he began his career as a union carpenter with Carpenter's Local 626, working many years for Ernest DiSabatino & Sons in Wilmington, Del.
Mr. Camp was a charter member of the Galena Volunteer Fire Company, which began in 1942. For 25 of those years, he rode the ambulance, providing EMT care to residents of Kent and Cecil counties. For 14 years he taught CPR. He had served on the board of directors and was an EMS lieutenant. He was still attending fire meetings and functions where, in these later years, he was a fixture tending to the coffee maker. The Galena Volunteer Fire Company Banquet Hall is named in honor of Mr. Harvey.
His memberships also include life member of Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post 36 and a 72-year member of Olivet United Methodist Church, where he had served as an usher.
He was a volunteer in the emergency room at Union Hospital for 20 years and umpired for more than 40 years for Galena Little League Baseball, Softball and the women's softball leagues. He was known for being an outstanding catcher for Bi-State Team in the 1950s, a boxer and bowled with the Firemen's Bowling League. But playing baseball was his favorite pastime along with watching the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens. He enjoyed going to his two great-grandson's football and baseball games.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Marian Newnam Camp, in 2008 and three brothers, Pernell E. Camp, Emory "Bub" P. Camp and Eugene "Gene" Camp.
Mr. Camp is survived by his son, Thomas H. Camp (Barbara Jane) of Galena; daughter Susan N. Connor of Newark, Del.; granddaughters Ginger C. Camp and Hazel P. Camp, both of Galena and Rebecca Connor of Newark, Del.; and two great-grandsons:,Gunnar Thomas Watts and Kevin Bryce Isadorski, both of Galena.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 21, in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22 . Burial with Fireman and Military Honors will follow in Galena Cemetery.
