Everett Dunham Obituary

Everett Dunham, 91, of Winchester, passed away Monday afternoon, May 13, 2013, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born Dec. 18, 1921, near New Salem in Pike County, the son of the late Andrew and Pearl Grey Dunham.

He graduated from Pittsfield High School and entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as an Aviation Storekeeper First Class aboard the escort carrier USS Gilbert Islands. He received the Asiatic Pacific Area medal with three stars, Philippine Liberation medal, American Area medal, Victory-World War II medal and the Good Conduct medal. While aboard the USS Gilbert Islands he was part of the support group preparing for the invasion of Japan. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946.

Everett married Delfa Pine, and she preceded him in death Aug. 20, 2003. After he returned from service he began farming in Scott County. He retired from farming in 1996. He was a member of the Winchester United Methodist Church where he served on all of the various boards over the years. He was member of the Winchester Kiwanis Club, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Drainage District Commissioner, Scott County Farm Bureau and headed the Legion Burgoo committee for many years. He was a quiet, kind and generous man to all who knew him.

Surviving is his son, Tom Pile (wife, Kay) of Edwardsville; four grandchildren, Jane Hamilton Nielsen (husband, Mark) of Ridgefield, Conn., Elizabeth Pile Baker (husband, Andy) of Arlington, Va., Kate Hamilton Grasman (husband, Jeroen) of Piedmont, Calif., and John Pile of Edwardsville. A sister, Anna Mae Dean of Baylis; and six great-grandchildren, Robert Nielsen, Helen Nielsen, John Baker, Will Baker, Andrew Grasman and Daniel Grasman also survive. He was also preceded by a daughter, Sonie Hamilton in 1999 (surviving husband, Bob Hamilton of Alexandria, Va.)

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Winchester United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Winchester City Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 12 noon until time of services Monday at the church. Memorials can be made to the Winchester United Methodist Church or the Winchester EMS. Condolences may be left for the family at www.airsman-hires.com. The Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester is in charge of arrangements.
