The Rev. Alf E. Anderson, 95, of Ashland died Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.
He was born Jan. 7, 1915, in Chicago, the son of Arnt and Justine Johansen Anderson. He married Betty Parkes on Aug. 19, 1951, in Champaign, and she survives.
He is also survived by a son, Roger Anderson (wife, Martha) of Pleasant Plains; two daughters, Kathryn Anderson of Rushville and the Rev. Mary Ellen Sharp (husband, Jeff) of Springfield; three grandchildren, Ryan Anderson (wife, Carrie) of Jacksonville, Glen Anderson of Pleasant Plains and Emily Sharp of Springfield; a great-grandchild, Esme Anderson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marguerite Stenseng; and a brother, Roy A. Anderson.
The Rev. Anderson received a ThB degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1942, a BA degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in 1944 and a BD degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1945. He was ordained to Christian ministry on April 28, 1943. He pastored churches in Wisconsin and Illinois including Berea Christian Church, south of Prentice, First Baptist Church of Rosewood Heights and First Baptist Church of Ashland.
He owned and operated Anderson Jewelry and Fine Watch Repair in Ashland from 1955 to 1986. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Ashland. An accomplished and gifted pianist, Alf authored many articles for the Ashland Sentinel, enjoyed participating in the Senior Olympics and faithfully exercised at the Fit Club in Springfield for many years.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Ashland with the Rev. Wayne Mollohan officiating. Burial will follow at Farmington Cemetery in Farmingdale. The family will meet friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorial gifts are suggested to First Baptist Church of Ashland.
