Bertha I. Ackerman, 83, of Virginia, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
She was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Wood River, the daughter of John and Suzie Sherman Hogle. She married Elmer E. Ackerman on May 3, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo., and he preceded in death Feb. 21, 1994.
She is survived by three sons, Ken Ackerman (wife, Della), Jim Ackerman (wife, Nancy) and Mark Ackerman (wife, JoAnn), all of Virginia; a daughter, Karen Sue Ackerman of Virginia; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, John Ackerman (surviving wife, Cindy of Chandlerville); and several brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Ackerman was an active prayer warrior for New City Church and WTJR Television. She provided home care services for the elderly in the Virginia area and was an active volunteer with the Virginia BBQ along with other community activities. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, sewing and baking. She valued her family, friends and neighbors and was well known for her words of encouragement and her affectionate hugs.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.
