Donald Harvey Galloway, 85, of Mount Sterling, passed away at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 6, 1927, in Lee Township in Brown County, the son of Grover and Helen Parker Galloway. He married Mary Louise Clostermery on Jan. 27, 1951, in Mount Sterling, and she preceded him in death April 19, 2011.
Mr. Galloway dedicated his life to the education of young people. He served as principal and teacher at Buckhorn Grade School, served as teacher and coach at both North Grade School and Camp Point Central, was teacher, coach, assistant principal and athletic director for Brown County High School and served as Regional Superintendent of Schools for Brown, Cass and Schuyler counties for several years. Don served as president and part-time director of the Mount Sterling Park District for several years and was also the Pro-shop Manager for Rolling Greens Golf Club in Mount Sterling.
Mr. Galloway graduated from Mount Sterling High School with the class of 1945 and then graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Don then received his Master of Science Degree in Education from Western Illinois University in 1967.
Mr. Galloway was a veteran of World War II
, having served his country in the U.S. Navy
from 1945 until 1946.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Mount Sterling. Don was also a life member of the NEA, a member of the IEA, the Brown County Teacher's Association, Illinois High School Officials Association, Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents, Illinois Retired Teacher's Association, Rolling Greens Golf Club, the United States Golf Association, United States Golf Society, the Mount Sterling American Legion Post 374, the United States Trotting Association, the Brown County Fair Association and was a trustee for Rigg Cemetery.
Survivors include eight children, Robert Galloway and his wife Lisa of Bloomington, Vicky Scott and her husband Jere of Springfield, Harriett "Hedy" Ewing, Susan Huddleston and her husband Jim, Jay Galloway and David Galloway and his wife Dorcas, all of Mount Sterling, Terry Hicks of Dewey, Okla., and her companion Andy Newton, and Richard "Boobie" Galloway of Mount Sterling. Eighteen grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren also survive, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clifton and James Arlin Galloway; and four sisters, Barbara Burton, Jean Gregory, Frances Bordenkircher and Betty Galloway.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hendricker Funeral Home in Mount Sterling, with Pastor Steve Surratt officiating. Burial will be at Rigg Cemetery, north of Mount Sterling. A military service will be conducted at the graveside. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends may also call from 8 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home.
