Edwin H. Engelbrecht, 97, of Jacksonville passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville. He was born August 15, 1916, on the family farm in Morgan County, the son of August and Johanna Fargo Engelbrecht. He married Jayne Ferguson on August 15, 1941, at Appanoose Presbyterian Church in Niota, and she preceded him in death on December 30, 2004.
He is survived by three sons, Stephen (wife, Mary Evelyn) Engelbrecht of Murrayville, Eric (wife, Launa) Engelbrecht of Moline and John (wife, Susan) Engelbrecht of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren, Fr. S. Stephen Engelbrecht of Atkinson, Matthew Engelbrecht of Woodson, Anna Engelbrecht of Moline and Erica Engelbrecht of Hoffman Estates; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, David; three brothers, Aldo Engelbrecht, Norman Engelbrecht and Karl Engelbrecht; and one sister, Alma Ellerman.
Mr. Engelbrecht was a graduate of Carthage College and later acquired an advanced degree in educational administration at Western Illinois University. He was a 3½-year veteran of the United States Army
during World War II
. He devoted 30 years to education as a teacher and later administration, retiring as principal at Jonathan Turner Jr. High in 1976. He was an avid reader and loved hunting, fishing and gardening. In 1947 he was elected to the Board of Supervisors in Hancock County and later served on the Extra Board of the Santa Fe Railroad for seven years. Prior to the construction of the new YMCA building he was a member of the Board of Directors. Following retirement, he was employed part-time for 11 years at Williamson Funeral Home. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Neelyville.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church at Neelyville with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at Neelyville. The family will meet friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
