Harold E. Barfield, 80, of rural Pleasant Plains, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 14, 1930, in Naples, the son of Lester and Helen Lindsey Barfield. He married Betty Lou Harrison on Feb. 14, 1953, and she preceded him in death Jan. 23, 1997.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda Brewer (husband, Mike) of Pleasant Plains and Alice Kern (husband, Dan) of Pleasant Plains; five grandchildren, Nick Kern (wife, Ashton), Nathaniel Kern and Tyler Kern, all of Pleasant Plains, Tiffany Roe of Springfield and Chris Brewer (wife, Sarah) of Billings, Mont.; three brothers, Lester Barfield (wife, Janie) of Jacksonville, John Barfield of Mount Sterling and Jim Barfield (wife, Karen) of Jacksonville; three sisters, Louise Briggs of Mulberry, Fla., Sarah Ann Varner of Meredosia and Shirley DeJaynes of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Rosalie Stark.
Mr. Barfield served with both the U.S. Air Force and later with the U.S. Army during the Korean War
. He was a grain and livestock farmer in the Pleasant Plains-Salisbury area for over 30 years. Harold loved and respected the land that he farmed and all the wild animals that resided there. In addition, he worked as a bus driver for Pleasant Plains School District and later as a custodian for Farmingdale Elementary School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ashland, where he formerly served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed the young children of the church and always carried a treat to share with them.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Ashland, with burial at Richland Cemetery, north of Pleasant Plains. The family will meet friends from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. Memorial gifts are suggested to First Baptist Church.
