Howard L. "Slug" Hale, 93, of Waverly, died Thursday morning, Feb. 21, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born Jan. 2, 1920, in Waverly, the son of the late Raymond and Myrtle Garman Hale. He married Helen J. Sadler on Oct. 2, 1943, in Waverly, and she preceded him in death Dec. 7, 2006.
Surviving is one daughter, Pamela Robinson and husband Robert of Springfield; four sons, Larry Hale and wife Barbara J. and Donald Hale and wife Barbara A., both of Springfield, Gary Hale and wife Peggy of Longview, Texas, and James Hale and wife Angie of Athens; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Alberta Hale; and a brother, Lloyd Hale.
Mr. Hale was a maintenance foreman for the U.S. Government as well as a former employee of Sangamo Electric. He was a Army
veteran of World War II
and was in the Battle of the Bulge and was a made a honorary citizen of Veilsalm, Belgium and Bastone, Belgium in 2012. He was a lifetime member of the VFW
. He was well known for canning pickles and peppers and giving them to his friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial will be at Waverly East Cemetery, where graveside military rites will be conducted by the Waverly American Legion Post. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
