Orpheus O. "Sam" Davis, 92, of Rushville, passed away at 3:15 p.m., Monday, April 28, 2014, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
He was born on July 1, 1921, in Camden, the son of the late Finis C. and Edith (Cady) Davis. He married Joan L. Trefiletti on June 5, 1950, in Rushville and she preceded him in death on Nov. 23, 1996. He later married Betty Esther on June 5, 1999, in Rushville, and she survives.
Also surviving are one step son, Joe Stambaugh and wife Letha of Astoria; and several nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Rushville High School, he served as a staff sargent in the United States Air Force during WWII
from 1942 to 1945. He was a trooper with Illinois State Police for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He then worked for the Schuyler County Sheriff's Office. He served eight years on the Schuyler County Board.
Sam was a was a member of the First United Methodist, where he served as Trustee. He was also a member of the Camden Masonic Lodge 648 and the Quincy Consistory. He was a member of the Schuyler American Legion Post 4 and the Illinois Retired Police Association of Illinois.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Rushville, with the Rev. J. William Werner officiating. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville, with Masonic rites at 7 p.m. Burial will be at the Huntsville Cemetery, with military rites by the U.S. Air Force burial detail and the Schuyler American Legion Post 4.
