Thomas S. Clemons, 83, of Crest Hill, and formerly of Ashland and Springfield, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at Joliet Area Hospice in Joliet.
He was born May 27, 1925, in Ashland, the son of Gilbert M. and Addie Smith Clemons. He married Kathleen Ann Sharp on July 9, 1946, in Salem, and she survives.
He is also survived by a daughter, Debbie Cargerman (husband, Michael) of Plainfield; four grandchildren, Chris Clemons of Waterloo, Kevin Clemons of Springfield and Jeffrey Cargerman and Joel Cargerman, both of Plainfield; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Trent Clemons, both of Highland; a sister, Shirley McClure of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Terry A. Clemons (surviving wife, Linda of Riverton); and a brother, Lawrence Clemons (surviving wife, Jane of Kentucky).
Mr. Clemons served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed 32 years by the State of Illinois, retiring in 1984. He also sold advertising specialties in the Springfield area for over 40 years and gained a reputation for having never met a stranger. He was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church and Springfield VFW
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ashland United Methodist Church in Ashland, with burial and military honors at Ashland Cemetery. The family will meet friends at the church from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services. Memorial gifts are suggested to Joliet Area Hospice or Springfield VFW Post 755.
