Arthur Fred "“Art”" Gielau (1927 - 2014)

Arthur Fred "Art" Gielau, 86 of Beardstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at Heritage Health in Beardstown.

He was born Dec. 4, 1927, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Otto and Anna Krueger Gielau. He married Lois Adkinson on Dec. 22, 1949, and she preceded him in death on March 16, 1996. He later married Mary Lou Anderson on Sept. 20, 1997, in Beardstown.

Surviving is his wife, Mary Lou Gielau, of Beardstown; his children, Terrence "Terry" (wife, Rae Ann) Gielau of Abingdon, Robert "Bob" (wife, Joann) Gielau of Beardstown, Dianna (husband, Lyle) Crum of Rushville, and Toni (husband, Ron) Quinn, Mark (wife, Pam) Anderson, Theresa (husband, Gary) Campbell, and Kathleen (husband, Steve) Long, all of Beardstown; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Wooldrik of Iowa City, and Mildred (husband, Bill) Duhl of Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lois Gielau; his daughter, Carlita Kay Gulley; five brothers, Wilbur "Dutch," Otto "Pete," Robert, Laverne "Tony," and Richard "Dick" Gielau; and four sisters, Alice McDougal, Florine Gleason, Norma Ricklefs, and Anna Marie Gielau in infancy.

Arthur attended Denver High School in Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a proud member of Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post 1239 in Beardstown. Art worked and retired from Burlington Northern after 44 years. He was member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown and the Moose Lodge in Rushville. Art enjoyed fishing and mushroom hunting, playing and "cheating" at cribbage and summerset, and wiffleball games with his family. Art was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Burial will be at the Messerer Cemetery near Frederick. The family will meet with friends 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials have been suggested to Beardstown Little League, Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice, or Heritage Health Activity Fund.
