Barbara Jean Kindred Rubenking, 91, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013, at Carle Hospital in Urbana.

Barbara was born Jan. 6, 1922, to Louis Dee and Lucile Parker Kindred. She married Glen Broehl Rubenking on June 17, 1945, in Champaign. He preceded her in death March 22, 2006.

Surviving are her children, Marla Wachter of Bloomington, Mark Rubenking (Susan) of Fisher, Marisa Meador (Brian Cook) of Champaign and Marcy Jones (Terry) of Jacksonville. Barbara also is survived by one sister, Laura Elizabeth "Betsy" Nicholson of Macomb; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Barbara graduated from Beason High School in 1939, and the University of Illinois in 1943, with a bachelor's degree in Home Economics. She taught at Champaign and Watseka high schools before starting a family. During her years as a homemaker, Barbara was an active member of the Arlington Heights Presbyterian Church, and later, Fisher United Methodist Church, where she served as choir director for many years. She was also a long-time member of United Methodist Women. She enjoyed participating in Homemakers Extension and Evening Club over the years and served in many leadership roles. Barbara was a 4-H leader where she taught young ladies the fine arts of sewing and cooking. Barb was called on by many friends to plan and organize events and was known for writing poems, adding an artistic flare or providing the creative essence behind the scenes.

She enjoyed performing both on stage and off! Barbara was always the life of the party and loved to sing from an early age. With a flair for design, Barbara's incredible sewing ability shined through dance recital costumes, her children's clothing and her own wardrobe, but most dramatically through her three daughters' wedding gowns. Known by everyone for her abundant talents and giving spirit, Barb was happiest spending time with her family. Her lap was a constant invitation to her grandchildren and every household pet.

Barb loved flowers but would appreciate your generosity to support the , the Carle Development Foundation (Palliative Care Program) or the Fisher United Methodist Church.
