SPRINGFIELD - Benny Leotta, 91, of Springfield died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014, at St. John's Hospice. He was born on December 21, 1922, in Springfield to Joseph and Mary Zumo Leotta. He married Dorothy Olds on May 31, 1947, and she preceded him in death on April 3, 2012. Also preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Carmela Bollinger.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen Leotta of Springfield and Phillip M. (Jo Ellen) Leotta of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Michael (Megan) Leotta of Springfield and Emily (Scott) Hudson of Jacksonville; three great-grandchildren, Jack and Adalyn Hudson and Ellery Leotta; and one niece.
Mr. Leotta was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish at Sacred Heart Church. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran who served during World War II as a radio operator on a B-26 bomber, with 32 missions in the European Theater. He retired from Sangamo Electric after 36 years of service. Benny was an avid golfer. He enjoyed playing golf and working on golf clubs during his retirement. He enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals and photography.
Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Staab Funeral Home with burial at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Sangamon County Inter-Veterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Katharine Drexel Parish at Sacred Heart Church.
