Betty H. Fernandes, 89, of Jacksonville, passed away Wednesday evening, Aug. 28, 2013, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
She was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Fred and Lora Sargent Goodrick.
Mrs. Fernandes is survived by two children, Lora (husband, Lee) Hovasse of Jacksonville and David (wife, Erin) Fernandes of Clayton, Mo.; four grandchildren, Mark (wife, Michelle) Hovasse of Jacksonville, Neal (wife, Teresa) Hovasse of Springfield, Kim Hovasse of Jacksonville and Madeira Fernandes of Clayton, Mo.; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Phyllis Hubbard of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Marjorie Patrick, Mary Ruth Easley and Gladys Flynn; and one brother, Willard Goodrick.
Mrs. Fernandes retired at the age of 80 from The Job Center in Jacksonville. She previously was employed at Hertzberg-New Method Book Bindery, J. Capps and Sons, and NESCO. She was a longtime member of Brooklyn United Methodist Church in Jacksonville and the Rebekah Circle. Mrs. Fernandes was also a member of the AMVETS and V.F.W. Auxiliaries.
Foremost in Betty's life was her family. She loved playing games and working puzzles with her grandchildren. She spent countless hours in the company of her sisters on her glider. She was a longtime fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and University of Illinois basketball.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call after noon today at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 5:30-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army Youth Programs or the donor's choice.
