Charles W. Collins, 89, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born Feb. 23, 1924, in Virginia, the son of William and Dollie Decker Collins. He married Doris Cox on Sept. 5, 1970, in Jacksonville, and she survives.
He is also survived by three daughters, Sandra (Mike Alpern) Collins of Skokie, Lisa (Dennis) DeGroot of Jacksonville and Jody (Jeff) Smith of Matanzas Beach; one son, Stephen Collins of Missouri; four grandchildren, Seth (Kym) Wollwage, Richard (Shelby) Emmons Jr., Dillon DeGroot and Shelly Reno; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Dustin DeGroot; four brothers; and three sisters.
Mr. Collins was a 1942 graduate of Murrayville High School and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He had been manager of Newman's Shoes in Jacksonville for many years, and was a member of the Jacksonville Elks Lodge, AMVETS, and Knights of Columbus. Charlie enjoyed golf, fishing, mushroom hunting and bowling. He was an avid Illini and die-hard Cub fan.
The family will meet friends 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Barton W. Stone Volunteer Association. Condolences may be left at www.buchanancody.com.
