DONALD JOSEPH STRADER

Donald Joseph Strader was born June 20, 1930, in Danville, the son of George and Helen Wall Strader. Don gave us so much, but on November 27, 2013, Our Lord knew it was time to end his suffering and take Don to the home Don had been preparing for all his life.

Don married Shirley Techtow at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Daville on June 9, 1956. They are the parents of Jim (Linda) Strader and Laura (Brian) Ward of Jacksonville and John (Mary) Strader of Lincoln. They have nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers George, Bill and John, and one sister, Sister Georgine. One brother, Richard, survives in Florida.

Don graduated from Schlarman High School in Danville in 1949. He lettered in football and basketball. He then served four years in the United States Navy, being stationed in Japan and Alaska.

Don graduated from the University of Illinois in 1958, majoring in business. He was employed in management with J.C. Penney in Chicago and then with Illinois Power Company. He was office supervisor for Illinois Power in Jacksonville until his retirement.

Don was secretary of the Lions Club for many years.

Don enjoyed all the fun years in Chicago, Danville and Jacksonville with Shirley and raising their family. All the family trips to Florida, camping and attending the kids' many activities and traditions (popcorn and Snickers parties, sleeping under the Christmas tree one night before Christmas, etc.) When the grandchildren came along, he was the one to go to for spoiling. He could never turn down a good time with them (from adventures or walks to staying home to play cards.) After his retirement, he loved all the years he and Shirley spent traveling north, south, east and west.

Don and Shirley were devoted to the Rosary, saying it together every day.

The family is conducting private services and requests no flowers. They just request that you "do something nice for someone." Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com.
