Herbert M. Widdowson of Springfield, and formerly of Carrollton, died surrounded by loving family at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2013.
He was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Morgan County, to James M. and Pauline Hackley Widdowson. He married Helen G. Richards in 1954, and she preceded him in death in 1995. He is also preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Wendy Widdowson.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane W. Richards of Dallas and the Rev. Mary W. Martin of Princeton, Texas; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth A. Martin of Princeton, Texas and Rebecca K. Martin of Princeton, Texas. Also surviving is his devoted, loving companion Mary L. Adkinson of Springfield; and her daughter Kim (Robert) Ruff.
Herbert attended Carrollton Public Schools and graduated from the College of Agriculture at the University of Illinois, Champaign. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines in World War II and the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He owned and operated the J.M. Widdowson & Son Lumber Company in Carrollton until he retired in 1986. He was a director of the Greene County National Bank in Carrollton now known as the CNA Bank and Trust in Carrollton for many years. Herbert was a lifetime member of the Masons and Ansar Shrine of Springfield. He belonged to Court 20, Royal Order of Jesters of Springfield. He was an active member of the Ansar Jazz Band, an avid golfer and enjoyed spending the winter months in Naples, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Thomas Christell officiating. Immediately following the memorial service, the family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Friday at Staab Funeral Home.
