John C. "J.C." Coop (1939 - 2013)

John C. "J.C." Coop, 73, of Murrayville, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.

He was born July 9, 1939, in Alexander, the son of John A. and Louise Walsh Coop. He married Shirley Westrope on Feb. 14, 1986, at Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, and she survives.

Mr. Coop is also survived by three children, Jennifer Coop of Murrayville and Janene Coop and John Jason Coop, both of Fort Myers, Fla.; four grandchildren, Nathan and Nicole White, J.C. May and J.J. Coop; two stepdaughters, Cindy Cully of Belleville and Candy Slavens of Bellevue, Neb.; four stepgrandchildren; one sister, Mary Jackson of Jacksonville; and one brother, Harry (wife, Kaye) Coop of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Jeffery J. Coop; and one stepson, Steven Haley.

Mr. Coop was a 1957 graduate of Routt High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1958, and served for nearly four years, stationed in Thule, Greenland. He returned to Jacksonville and worked for General Telephone and LaCrosse Lumber before beginning a 20-year career as a firefighter with the Jacksonville Fire Department.

J.C. was a longtime member of Church of Our Saviour, and a member of the Knights of Columbus and Jacksonville Moose. He was well-known for his smile. He loved working in his yard and gardening. John was an avid Cub fan.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, with burial at Calvary Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 10 a.m. until 12 Noon Saturday at the Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Murrayville-Woodson EAS or Routt Catholic High School.
