John Franklin Farmer Jr. (1934 - 2014)

John Franklin Farmer Jr., 79, of Murrayville, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 20, 2014, at his winter home in St. Cloud, Fla.

He was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Ceres, the son of Edith Mae Schutz and John Farmer Sr. He married Wanda Mae VanBebber, June 5, 1960, and they had two daughters. He then married Alice Faye Smith, June 28, 1986.

Surviving is his wife, Alice, of Murrayville; daughters Susie (Rob) Angenendt of Murrayville and Jeannie (Brian) Battefeld of Meredosia; five grandchildren, Erin (Jeff) Cummins, Larissa (Chris) Volk, Tyler (Jennifer) Angenendt, and Cody and Kelsea Battefeld; six great-grandchildren; step-daughter Jean (Todd) Sanders of Jacksonville; step-son Bruce Smith of Florida; step grandchildren Jade Lowe, Jessica and Adam Withee, Taylor Kirchofer, and Morgan, Montana and Amy Smith; 11 step great-grandchildren; brother Charlie Farmer of Mattoon; and several nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents; brother Lonnie; sisters Betty Anders and Wanda Akers; step daughter Tina Smith; step-son Mike Smith; and step-grandsons Joe Fulkerson, and Andy, D.J., and Stewart Smith.

John graduated from Winchester High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He worked at Baker Chevrolet in Murrayville for 25 years. John ran his own repair shop and worked at AC Humko for 42 years. He served on the Murrayville Fire Department for 45 years, many as fire chief. He was a man of great faith, devoted to God and his family. He loved gospel and bluegrass music. John also enjoyed camping with his wife and friends, working on machinery, and visiting with friends at the gas station. He was very proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. Most of all, he enjoyed his time with his wife and family.

A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Murrayville United Methodist Church, with the family meeting friends from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Murrayville Fire Department. Daws Family Funeral Home in Murrayville is in charge of arrangements.
