John P. Costello Jr., 73, of Franklin, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born Aug. 19, 1940, in Strasburg, Pa., the son of John Patrick and Frances Warren Costello. He moved to Florida at the age of 2 and later graduated from the Deland Military Academy in 1957. He married Carol Diane Fellers on May 29, 1981, in Pontiac, and she survives.
He is also survived by one daughter, Julie Beth (husband, Brian) Morris of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Bradley Joseph Phillips of Jacksonville and Kayne Morris and Abigayle Morris, both of Winchester; one sister, Patricia Young of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Costello was a Lieutenant with the State of Illinois Department of Corrections for 35 years, serving prisons in Pontiac and Jacksonville. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict, and retired after 14 years of enlistment. Mr. Costello was an accomplished marksman. He served as a competitive shooter with the Illinois State Police, and was a Ballistic Firearms Trainer for the Morgan County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Rifle Association, American Rifle Association, Illinois State Rifle Association, and Illinois Police Association. He enjoyed watching movies and playing on his computer, and will be remembered as a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather.
The family will host a memorial gathering at their home at 109 Prairie Street in Franklin from 2-4 p.m. Sunday. Private committal services will be held at a later date.
