John W. Coats, 64, of Jacksonville, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born Aug. 8, 1948, in Jacksonville, the son of John E. and Mamie Eileen Angelo Coats.
He is survived by one daughter and two sons, Natasha (Derek) Howard and Barrett Coats, both of Edwardsville, and Andrew Coats of Collinsville; and three sisters, Georgianna (James) Kitselman and Mary Miller, both of Murrayville, and Sharon Kennedy of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Coats graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1967, and then was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, receiving two Purple Heart medals for wounds received in action. He was the owner/operator of Bug Master for several years. John enjoyed working with and collecting model trains.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with burial at Winchester City Cemetery. The family will meet friends 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.
