Marvin D. Steging, 70, of Jacksonville died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at his residence, with his three daughters by his side.
He was born Aug. 13, 1943, in rural Havana, the son of Carl J. and Jeannette McDonald Steging. He shared marriage vows with Jo Ann Lascelles on July 22, 2013, in Jacksonville, and she survives.
He also is survived by three daughters, Darnelle (Randy) Peters of Lewistown, Renee (Bob) Hayes of Elmwood and Julie (Roger) Seifert of Petersburg; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Larry (Carol) Steging of Irving, Texas, and Glen Steging of Pekin.
Mr. Steging was a 1961 graduate of Havana High School. He had worked out of Laborer's Local #253 for more than 30 years. He attended Hopewell Baptist Church in Snicarte and was a member of the Jacksonville Moose Lodge. Marvin was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a forward observer in an artillery unit in the Central Highlands. He and Jo Ann enjoyed traveling and sightseeing.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hopewell Baptist Church in Snicarte, with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Friends may call after noon Tuesday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, where the family will meet friends 4-6 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Hopewell Baptist Church or Green Pastures Christian Retreat Center.
