Raymond L. "Ray" "Pooch" Pettit, 91, of Springfield, and formerly of Tallula, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at the Illinois Veterans' Home in Quincy.
He was born May 15, 1921, in Ashland, the son of James William and Elsie Mae Garner Pettit.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Ann Prescott; four brothers, Howard and Orville Pettit and in infancy, Lloyd and Harold Pettit; and five sisters, Dorothy DeRosa, Myrtle Meece, Neva Gilbert, Alberta Cline and in infancy, Glenna Pettit.
Mr. Pettit owned and operated Pettit's Insurance and Real Estate Agency in Tallula for 23 years prior to his retirement in 1980.
He served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from 1941 to 1946, with the 742nd Tank Battalion & Amphibious Unit. Raymond was proud of his military service and valued his Honor Flight experience in May 2012. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, American Legion, Eagles, AMVETS and Odd Fellows.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland, with burial and military honors at Garner Chapel Cemetery, north of Philadelphia. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of services. Memorial gifts are suggested to Garner Chapel Cemetery.
