Robert Edwin Hammel, 70, of Beardstown, died Monday, April 8, 2013, in his home.

He was born Feb. 12, 1943, in Beardstown, the son of Ostie Robert and Helen Elizabeth Dorwart Hammel.
Surviving is his sister, Kay (husband, Gary) Bray of Litchfield; his niece, Scherry (husband, Rodney) Spangler of Ballwin, Mo.; his nephew, J.P. (wife, Skye) Bray of Beaumont, Texas; great-nieces and great-nephews, Nicolle Bray, Celine Spangler, and Spencer, Samuel and Oliver Bray; and great-great-niece, Natalie Weller. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Karol Hammel.
Rob graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1961, and also graduated from Illinois College. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam during the Vietnam War and was employed with Burlington-Northern Railroad as an engineer until his retirement. Rob was a member of St. Alexius Catholic Church and also BPO Elks Lodge 1007 in Beardstown. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing and spending his time with his faithful black lab, Sam. He loved playing cards and telling a good story. Rob mostly enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown. Burial will be at St. Alexius Catholic Cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with the family meeting friends following the prayer service until 7 p.m. Memorials have been suggested to Cass County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.
