Saundra Phalen Kirk, 68, of Springfield, and formerly of Jacksonville, passed away suddenly after a short but courageous battle with stomach cancer, Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
She was born in Jacksonville Jan. 15, 1944, the daughter of Charles "Bud" and Mildred "Millie" DeFrates Phalen. Her father preceded her in death, as well as an infant son.
Saundra married James H. "Jim" Kirk, and he survives. She is also survived by her daughter, Druanne (husband, David) Allen and two granddaughters, Tess and Ruby, all of Rochester; her mother, Mildred "Millie" Phalen-Doyle of Springfield; her brother, Chuck (wife, Chris) Phalen of Danville; her sister, Peggy Jo Baker, and a niece, Dana "Chris" Baker, both of Springfield; and her nephew, Douglas Baker of Virden.
Saundra retired from the State of Illinois after many years of service, with the Department of Children and Family Services, the Department of Professional Regulation, and lastly with the Department of Corrections. She was also an independent nail technician and a Mary Kay cosmetic representative. She was a member of the Elks Lodge, a strong supporter of the Animal Protective League, a member of the Young Republicans, served as the Republican precinct committee woman, and was a member of the Central Illinois Corvettes. She enjoyed gaming, knitting and attending car shows. She loved animals, especially her three dogs. She was active with her 1961 graduating class of Jacksonville High School Reunion Committee.
Following her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded by Bisch Crematory. Private services will be held at a later date.
