Susan Van Winkle, 78, long-time resident of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at home, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
The Guest Book is expired.
She was born Aug. 14, 1935, in Jacksonville, to Charles and Florence Henry, who preceded her in death.
She was a 1953 graduate of Routt Catholic High School and attended Illinois College, both in Jacksonville.
Sue was married to Gerald Van Winkle, who preceded her in death in 1987. She is survived by her five children, Virginia Mobbs of Alachua, Fla., Jerry Lee Van Winkle of Fredericksburg, Va., Valerie Van Winkle of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Thomas (Tammy) Van Winkle of Slocomb, Alabama and David (Sonja) Van Winkle of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; granddaughters, Stephanie Mobbs, Leslie Garrison, Kimberly James, Rebecca Van Winkle and Alexis Van Winkle, as well as six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, David (Mern) Henry of Port St Lucie, Fla.; and sisters, Janet Nelson of Cassopolis, Mich., and Charlotte Henry of Niceville, Fla.
She assumed the position of President of MicroMed, a heart monitoring service, after the death of her husband, and served in that capacity for a number of years. In the subsequent years, she was employed by Drs. J.R. and Patti Hambley for almost 20 years, looking after their four children, Katherine, Robert, William and Caroline, with the same care and love as she provided for her own children.
Sue was a warm, caring person greatly loved and admired by all who knew her.
At her request, there will be no service. Instead, a Celebration of Her Life will be held at a later date. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the great health care and compassion shown her by Emerald Coast Hospice, Peoples Home Health and Sacred Heart Medical Oncology. Davis Watkins Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
