Robert K. Heitz, 82, of Rushville, passed away at 7:25 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at the Elms Nursing Home in Macomb.
He was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Schuyler County, the son of the late Carl and Carrie (Simpson) Heitz. He married Norma Jean Unger on Nov. 17, 1950, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Rushville, and she survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Kimberly K. Heitz of Rushville and her friend Vern McBride of Macomb; one son, Kevin V. Heitz and wife Clara J. of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Joshua Waggener, Ozzy Clements and fiancée Alisha McHone and Olivia Fergurson and husband Jason; one sister, Doris Hightower of Macomb; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kermit and Albert Heitz.
A graduate of Rushville High School, Robert first worked as a sales representative for Mickelberry's in Rushville. He enlisted with the Illinois National Guard and was called to duty during the Korean conflict, where he served in California and Orleans, France.
After his discharge, he earned a Bachelor of Education and later a Master of Administration degrees from Western Illinois University in Macomb. He began his career in education as a science teacher at Rushville Junior High School. He later served as an assistant principal of the K through 8th grades with the Schuyler School District. He was later principal of the PreK-4th grade at Washington and Webster schools. He retired after 34 years of service to the school district. He was proud to have had the opportunity to influence young people's lives.
Robert was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Rushville and its Christian Men's Fellowship. He was also a member of the Illinois Education Association, the National Education Association, the Illinois Principal's Association, served as past president of the Schuyler-Brown Retired Teachers Association, charter member and past president of the Rushville Lions Club and was also a member of the Guthrie-Pierce VFW Lodge 1239 in Beardstown. He served two terms on the Schuyler County Board and Chairman of the Schuyler County Food Basket. He coached Little League baseball and Junior High lightweight basketball. He served for 10 years with the Schuyler County Selective Service System. He enjoyed his farm and all Chicago sports.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Rushville, with the Rev. John Sowers officiating. Interment will follow at Rushville City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville.
