Robert Lee Sokolis, 71, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Passavant Area Hospital Transitional Care Unit in Jacksonville.
He was born Sept. 3, 1941, in Springfield, the son of Henry J. and Mary Ann Rains Sokolis.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Bernice McCurley of Jacksonville; his children, Cynthia, Stacey, Robbie and Randy; stepdaughter, Amy (husband, Mark) Darwent of Jacksonville; two stepgrandchildren, Justin (wife, Lexanne) Darwent of Springfield and Brittany (husband, Nick) Dyson of Jacksonville; stepgreat-granddaughter, Eliza Nicole Dyson of Jacksonville; and one brother, John (wife, Brenda) Sokolis of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Jody McCurley; one sister, Mary Jane Mitts; and one brother, George Sokolis (surviving wife, Joyce of Arizona.)
Robert served in the United States Marine Corps from 1958-63. He was a lifelong truck driver, most recently with Schwerman Trucking. He loved watching NASCAR and bass fishing, and was a member of the Thursday Night Bass Club. He cherished his grandchildren and spending time with them.
In accordance with his wishes, private services will be held. Memorials are suggested to Lake Jacksonville or the donor's choice. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left to the family online at www.airsman-hires.com.
