Elizabeth "Betty" Axel, 97, of Jacksonville died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care Center in Jacksonville.
Born September 12, 1916, in Lewistown, Mo., Betty was the daughter of Harvey H. and Helen Barlow Axel.
Betty graduated from Quincy Senior High and immediately went into the retail field. She became a women's wear buyer for department and specialty stores, including Midwest Department Stores (18) from Sioux Falls, S.D., to Tyler, Texas, and Wagner Group (6) from Michigan to Tennessee. After 35 years, she retired from retail and joined Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as an underwriter. She retired completely after 10 years.
Betty was a charter member of Parkway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Springfield, a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, past president of the Springfield chapter of Zonta International, past president of the Springfield chapter of National Association of Life Underwriters, and a longtime active volunteer for Barton Stone Volunteer Association (1994-2008).
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Jane Axel; and a brother, Harvey H. Axel Jr.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton Funeral Home in Clayton with entombment at South Side Cemetery Mausoleum in Clayton. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to Parkway Christian Church in Springfield or the Barton Stone Volunteer Association Gift Shop.
