Mae McMillen, 83, of South Jacksonville, died Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
She was born May 6, 1930, in Osbernville, the daughter of Silas Richard and Dora Kidd Dowdell. She married Earl J. McMillen on July 26, 1949, in Taylorville, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 1992.
She is survived by two daughters, Marsha (Chuck) Norris of Mount Auburn and Marilyn Standley of Springfield; six grandchildren, Kelly (Barry) Rice, Kurt (Missy) Norris, Bryan Gooden, Michael Gooden, Michael (Joy) Standley and David (April) Standley; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Hoy (Sue) Dowdell of Edinburg; one sister, Una Crain of Bradfordton; and a son-in-law, Ed Standley of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Diana Ahrens (surviving husband, Lyle, of Springfield); three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ray Dowdell (surviving wife, Imogene) and Herschel Dowdell.
Mrs. McMillen had worked at Stevies Latin Village in Springfield, the Dickey Jon Corp. and then the Wells Center in Jacksonville before retiring from the Morgan County Sherriff's office. She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose and the Route 66 Assn. At the age of 78, Mae was proud to receive an associate's degree from Lincoln Land Community College. She enjoyed the block parties and her many friends on Labor Drive.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Burial will be held noon Tuesday at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.
