Gary Lee "Cab Driver" Smith (1940 - 2014)

BEARDSTOWN - Gary Lee "Cab Driver" Smith, 73, of Beardstown passed away at 4:27 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born on July 14, 1940, in Macomb, the son of the late Clinton C. Smith and Virginia Walker-Smith Bryant.

He married Zella Mae Avery Saylor on November 27, 1987, in Beardstown. She survives along with four children, Ronnie Lee Smith and Velvie of Sunset, Texas, Sterling Smith and Jeannie of Muldrow, Okla., Tamatha Eloise and Leon Robb of Springfield, Mo., and Gary Edward Smith and April of Springfield, Mo.; one stepson, Bobby Saylor and Becky of Beardstown; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Becky Bryant Menely and Vic of Rushville; two brothers, Richard "Dick" Smith and Linda of Marissa and Roger Smith and Sandy of Chatham; two nieces; two nephews; and numerous cousins.

Gary worked at various jobs over the years. He retired in 1999 as a security guard in Jacksonville. He was a member of First Christian Church of Beardstown. He loved hunting, fishing, playing cards and bingo. Gary loved life and always had a smile and a joke for everyone. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with the Rev. Mike Courson officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Arenzville. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Saturday. Memorials may be given to Heritage Manor Activities Fund.
