Sherwood Lucian "Ty" Theivagt, 91, of Beardstown, died Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born June 29, 1923, in Beardstown, the son of Lucian and Ione White Theivagt. He married Fay Brockman on June 16, 1950, in Beardstown, and she preceded him in death on April 18, 2002.
Surviving are two sons, Mark (wife, Linda) Theivagt and Matthew Theivagt, both of Beardstown; two daughters, Cindy (husband, Mike) Cain of Bridge City, Texas, and Glenna (husband, Rex) Olson of Perry; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Reginald Theivagt of Fairfield; and one sister, Carol Bridges of Milwaukee, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one son, Joseph (surviving wife, Julie, of Beardstown) Theivagt.
Sherwood graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1941. He worked at Rock Island Arsenal and then joined the United States Navy in 1943 as an aviator and flew in the South Pacific during WWII. He also served as a lieutenant (JG). He returned to Beardstown and worked for Ameren until his retirement in 1986. Sherwood was a member of Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post 1239, Beardstown American Legion, BPO Elks Lodge 1007, and Cass Lodge 23 A.F. & A.M., where he served as a DeMolay dad, in Beardstown. He was also a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Illinois and National Rifle Associations, ASPCA, and Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Sherwood could fix anything and loved being outdoors.
Graveside memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Beardstown City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Guiding Eyes for the Blind or the No Kill Animal Shelter in Rushville.
