Robert C. Coates, 84, of Jacksonville died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at his home.
He was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Jacksonville, the son of Glenn Morris and T. Helen Bacon Coates. He married Anna Marie Brammeier on Nov. 3, 1951, in Manhattan, Kansas, and she survives.
Robert also is survived by three children, Steven (wife, Kathy) Coates of Merritt, Cynthia (husband, Allen) Prewitt of Jacksonville and Glenn R. Coates of rural Winchester; four grandchildren, Jared Smock of Merritt, Cheri Lynn (husband, Matthew) Orris of Bluffs, Ashley (husband, Teddy) Hembrough of Jacksonville and Audrey (husband, Jason) Wardell of Murrayville; six great-grandchildren, Abby, Case, Jera, Cayl, Kilynn and Jorja; one sister, Mary Ann Kemp of New Berlin; one sister-in-law, Bette L. Brammeier of Peoria; and many nieces and nephews.
Robert worked for Maurice Driver for 22 years, both as a carpenter and as an equipment operator for Morgan County Road District No. 2. He served for two years in the United States Army as a helicopter mechanic and later worked at Mrs. Tucker's and Moorman Feeds.
Bob could build or fix anything. He remodeled countless homes and built furniture for family and friends, repaired and rebuilt cars and motorcycles in his garage, and maintained a garden. If he wasn't in the midst of a project, he could be found tinkering in his garage.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Memorial Home Services Hospice or
