Barbara A. Jones (1935 - 2012)

Barbara A. Jones, 76, of Ashland, passed from this life to her eternal home after a courageous battle with cancer Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at her residence.

She was born May 16, 1935, in Springfield, the daughter of Harold and Amelia Hardin Atwood. She married Elza L. Jones on Aug. 25, 1954, in Virginia, and he preceded her in death June 17, 1988.

She is survived by five daughters, Debra Greer (husband, Kenneth) of Ashland, Melodee Cave (husband, Ronald) of Ashland, Pamela Jones of Springfield, Tammy Garner (husband, David) of Springfield and Hilerie Jones of Springfield; 10 grandchildren, Matthew Greer (Kathy), Erica Shannon (husband, Chad), Travis Cave (wife, Megan), Jennifer Leinberger (husband, Justin), Clint Cave (fiancée, Jade Leinberger), Ryan Garner, Nathan Garner, Colin Garner, Eliza Jones and Alyson Jones; seven great-grandchildren, Hallie Greer, Riley Shannon, Claire Greer, Jacob Shannon, Colby Cave, Caden Cave and Cooper Leinberger; five brothers, William Atwood, Tom Atwood, Dan Atwood, John Atwood and Richard Atwood; a sister, Janet Helmich; many nieces and nephews; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son in infancy, Roy Alan Jones; and a daughter, Valerie Jones.

Mrs. Jones was a graduate of Ashland High School and later completed her additional education by receiving an associate degree from Lincoln Land Community College and a bachelor's degree from the College of St. Francis at the age of 45. She was employed as a registered nurse for St. John's Hospital in Springfield for over 15 years. Barbara was a member of First Baptist Church in Ashland and the church's Ada Wallbaum Circle. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Ashland, with burial at Ashland Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Ashland. Memorial gifts are suggested to First Baptist Church.
