Dale H. Smith (1926 - 2012)

Dale Harold Smith, 86, of Mount Sterling, passed away at 8:35 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at the Heritage Health, Therapy & Senior Care in Mount Sterling.
He was born June 20, 1926, in Elmira, the son of Abe Lewis and Elsie Simmons Smith. He married Norma J. Smith on Jan. 10, 1946, in Mount Sterling, and she survives.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of World II and the Korean War, having served his country in the United States Army for over 22 years, retiring in 1971 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Dale was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and two awards of the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Mr. Smith then worked for General Telephone for over 15 years before retiring.
He attended Brown County Schools.
Mr. Smith was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mount Sterling. He was also a member of the Mount Sterling American Legion Post 374 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dale also enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Smith of Mount Sterling; and four children, Terry Smith and his wife Carol of Menomonee Falls, Wis., Ronald E. Smith and his wife Ivanka of Mount Sterling, John Smith of Antioch and Cathleen Koch and her husband Jerry of Mount Sterling. 10 grandchildren, Shelly Thiessen, Terry Dale Smith, Lisa Harper, Sarah Smith, Monica Heffernan, Michelle Stansky, Karla Koch, Elizabeth Ormond, Tracy Koch and Tyler Koch; and 17 great-grandchildren also survive along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Allena Phillips and Bernice Smith; and two brothers, Lozelle and Raymond Smith.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mount Sterling with Father Thomas Henseler and Father Steve Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the Mount Sterling Catholic Cemetery. A military service will be conducted at the graveside. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday evening in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mount Sterling. Friends may also call from 8-9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
