George Albert Buck (1915 - 2013)

George Albert Buck, 97, of Beardstown, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born June 9, 1915, in Arenzville, the son of Perry Elmer and Julia Powers Buck. He married Rosanne Jolly on Sept. 4, 1962, in Virginia.

Surviving is his wife, Rosanne Buck of Beardstown; three children, James (wife, Sarah) Buck of Tampa, Fla., Julian George (wife, Lynn) Buck of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Georgeann (husband, Matt) Logsdon of Beardstown; five grandchildren, James Tyler Buck, Sally Buck Hamer, Jane Ashley Buck, Lacy Logsdon and Tyler Logsdon; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan and Noelle Buck and Avery Hamer. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Beatrice Rupple and Bertha Meyer; and two brothers, John Buck and Ralph Buck.

George graduated from Beardstown High School in 1934, attended the University of Illinois, and was a pitcher on a baseball farm team in Tallahassee, Fla. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater, participating in battles in Guam and Iwo Jima. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Beardstown and became a truck driver for Teamsters Union Local 196, working several years for Illinois Valley Paving. George and his wife owned and operated the Central Tavern in Beardstown in the 1960s for several years and George was also well-known for Buck Stump Removal, which he owned and operated for 50 years. He enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, watching professional golf and was an avid card player. As a remarkable and loyal veteran, George was a lifetime member of Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post 1239 in Beardstown and the Beardstown American Legion. He was also a member of BPO Elks Lodge 1007 in Beardstown.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Burial will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery near Arenzville. The family will meet with friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials have been suggested to the Beardstown Elks Lodge 1007. Condolences may be left for the family at
