Jeffery Valjean Cook Jeff Cook, 57, of Marina del Rey, Calif. (formerly of Plainview), passed away on Jan. 28, 2013, at his home. He is survived by his wife Sylvia Aroth of Venice, Calif., and daughter Mika Zen Cook of Berkley, Calif.; parents V.G. and Irma Cook, and F.G. and Pat Jones of Plainview; sisters Julie Cook of Plainview, Michele Shannon and husband Larry of Midland and Valerie Custer and husband Joe of League City; along with eight nieces and nephews (who affectionately knew him as Uncle Jefe) and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is preceded in death by his sister, Debra Cook Cummings, in 2003. Jeff was born on May 8, 1955, in Esterville, Iowa. His family moved to Plainview in 1965. Jeff graduated with honors from PHS in 1973, cum laude from Rice University in 1977 and completed his master's degree at UCLA in 1981. For many years he worked in Los Angeles as a computer scientist, eventually attaining the position of director of internal research and development for a computer research laboratory within McAfee Antivirus. In 2003, he became a self-employed real estate investor and developer, and later an artist, designer and programmer for Wolfrule.com (Art from Cellular Automata). Jeff authored/co-authored more than 40 publications. Jeff's greatest joy and accomplishment was his daughter Mika Zen, 21. Jeff was known by all as a warm, big-hearted and generous man. A Celebration of Life will be held at 5 p.m. Feb. 2 at his wife's home in Venice, Calif.
