Mary Grounds Obituary

FORT WORTH -- Mary F. Grounds, 81, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017.
A Celebration of Life for Mary will be held in a few weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lighthouse Fellowship Church, 7200 Robertson Road, Fort Worth, TX 76135, or to Lighthouse Fellowship United Methodist Women at the same address.
Mary was born Sept. 16, 1935, to Ted and Erline Yarbrough in Seymour, Texas. She grew up in Albany, Texas, and graduated from Albany High School on May 28, 1954. She attended Hendrick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Abilene from September 1954 through September 1957 and received her designation of Registered Nurse on Dec. 4, 1957. During her training, a dietician at the hospital introduced Mary to her son; and on May 31, 1957, Jimmy Joe Grounds of Novice, Texas, and Mary were married. They lived in Abilene, Lubbock and Tulia, Texas, before settling in Plainview in 1964. Mary worked in the Plainview hospitals and she was floor supervisor for OB/GYN for 10 years. She has also worked at a nursing home and as a home health nurse. After the death of her husband in 1974, Mary became active in the Plainview Chapter of Parents Without Partners, serving as president. In June 1995, Mary moved to Fort Worth to be close to her children. She became an active member of the Greater Fort Worth Herb Society, serving as membership chair for 10 years. She also became active with the Lake Worth United Methodist Church - now Lighthouse Fellowship. She served as a member of the Welcome Team - greeting members and guests alike. She joined the United Methodist Women, serving as Vice President for a term. She also loved the Silver Foxes - the Senior Circuit of the church - going on trips and weekly luncheons. Mary was strong in faith and in living for the Lord. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy.
Mary is survived by her children, Leslie Diane Grounds of Fort Worth and David Grounds and his wife, Sheri of McKinney; grandson, Logan and granddaughter, Rachel of McKinney. She is also survived by countless brothers and sister in Christ.

I remember Mary and other members of the Herb Society including myself working to maintain the Herb Garden at the Log Cabin Village in Fort Worth. She took great pride in her work.
