Harold W. (Bud) Hendershot, 92, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014 at the Indiana Veterans Home in Lafayette, Ind. He had been a resident of the Veterans Home since February 2010.
Harold was born on Dec. 13, 1921 to Earl and Mable (Randall) Hendershot in Rensselaer. He joined the U.S. Navy
in 1942 and served until March 1946 and after a discharge that lasted until October 1946 he rejoined the Navy and served until his final discharge in March of 1968. He served in World War II
, the Korean War
, and Vietnam War
on ships that included the USS J Richard Ward DD243, USS Putnam DD 757, USS Parsons DD 949, USS Robinson DDG 12, LST 529 carrying cargo in Vietnam and finished his service aboard the USS Tawasa, ATF 92, a fleet tug in San Diego, California.
After Harold lost his wife, Aileen, in December 2006 he moved from Alameda, Calif. to Wolcott, Ind. to be closer to family.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son Ronald, sister Maxine and brother Harry.
He is survived by his sister, Alice Speer, who resides in Wabash with her daughter, Rosemary Job (Hal); sister Betty Hadley (James) of Monon, Ind.; brothers, George of Valparaiso and Earl Jr. of Rensselaer. Also surviving is one daughter, Diane; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; as well as numerous nephews, nieces and their families.
Final arrangements are being handled by Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Services in Wabash, Ind.
There will be no service at this time and a private family memorial at a later date.
