Robert Edward Nagel, 92, of Rensselaer passed away March 3, 2013 at the Rensselaer Care Center.
Robert was born Dec. 18, 1920, in Jasper County to Edward and Louise (Hildebrand) Nagel. He married Jennette Young on Sept. 11, 1947, at the St. Augustine Church in Rensselaer.
He attended St. Augustine Catholic School and Rensselaer and Remington High School. In July, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army
at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis. From Fort Dix, N.J., he was transferred to the Army Air Corps and sent overseas to Jorhat Air Base in India remaining there until he was discharged in November 1945. At the base he was in the 22nd Air Transport command in charge of transportation on the air base. Supplies were being flown over the Himalayn''s (The Hump) to the Chinese in China who were fighting the Japanese.
He was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer, the Holy Name Society, American Legion Post 29, Veterans of Foreign War Post 1279, the China, Burma, India Assoc. (CBI), Tecumseh Basha at Lafayette, Ind., and the State and National organizations of the CBI. He held offices and was Commander of the Tecumseh Basha for several years and Adjunct of the State CBI and Chef de Gare of the 40 and 8.
Robert was employed at the Jasper County Farm Bureau Co-Op for over 35 years in the petroleum department. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Jennette Nagel, several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Eileen Jenkins and Mary M. Werner, and a brother, William Nagel.
Friends may call at the Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer on Thursday, March 7, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer on Thursday, March 7, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Don Davison officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Rensselaer. Memorials may be made to the St. Augustine Catholic School.
