John L. Rishling, 73, of Austin, Texas peacefully succumbed to a 9-month battle of lymphoma cancer on Thursday, June 27, 2013.
John was the first child and only son of Eleanor (Dede) Long Rishling and Gerald Rishling. He was born on Oct. 17, 1939 in Rensselaer. From a young age, it was apparent that John loved designing and building. He also loved to swim. An avid lap swimmer, John was always drawn to pools, lakes, and beaches.
John graduated from Rensselaer Central High School in 1957. He then attended Purdue University and graduated from the University of Illinois, College of Architecture in 1964. He completed his Master's Degree of Architecture, with an emphasis on Urban Design, from The University of Illinois in 1966.
John married the love of his life Dorothy Jane Miller, also from Rensselaer, on August 29, 1965. They reared three daughters in Urbana, Ill. where he became a principal in the firm of Richardson, Severns, Scheeler, Greene and Associates.
In 1984 the family relocated to Texas where John began a career on the facilities staff at the University of Texas at Austin. He became an Associate Vice-President of Campus Planning and New Construction from which he retired in 2008. John was an active member, until retirement, with the Association of University Architects.
He was a very active member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Austin. Known for his quiet, yet knowledgeable leadership he served in several capacities. He also thoroughly enjoyed the comradery in many Bible studies, Emmaus reunion group and in the social Bethany Choo-Choo's club.
John and Dorothy have enjoyed the last five years in retirement between their home in Austin and their condominium in Central Lake, Mich. John was a compassionate and loyal man whose many traits included; honesty, discipline, morality, sacrifice, responsibility, and selflessness.
He is survived by his loving spouse, Dorothy, of almost 48 years and his beloved daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn (David) Webber, Jennifer Rishling, and Jane (Charles) West. Also surviving are his much enjoyed grandchildren: Madalyn Kay Webber, Molly Grace Webber, John Adger West and Warren Charles West. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Susan Emetti; nephew, Alex Emetti; and adoring aunt, Elizabeth Loy. He is also survived by his sister- in- law and brother-in-law, Alice and John Korniak; nephews, Ed (Lisa) Korniak and Kent (Beth) Korniak, and their families; cousins, Jeanne (Candy) Long and George (Butch) Long.
John was preceded in death by his precious granddaughter, Katherine Halstead West and his parents. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service with reception following will be held on Thursday, July 11, at 11 a.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church in Austin.
