Helen E. Alter, a 100-year-old resident of Rensselaer, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2014, at the Rensselaer Care Center, where she had lived for a short time.

Helen was born in Rensselaer on March 5, 1914, the daughter of the late Walter L. and Sarah (Holmes) Smith. She lived most of her life in Rensselaer, grew up in Porter County and had lived in Torrance, California.
She graduated from Hebron High School with the class of 1931, and went on to attend Minnesota Business College. She was a secretary for the Torrance Unified School District for 21 years, retiring in 1976.
On Dec. 25, 1939, at the Rosebud Church in Union Township, Jasper County, Helen married Cecil E. "Zeke" Alter. Zeke preceded her in death on April 25, 1996.
Helen was active in many organizations and was a 70-year member of the Order of Eastern Star Evening Chapter. She was a longtime member of the Brushwood United Methodist Church, Rensselaer.
Surviving are her loving daughters, Barbara (James) France of Santa Rosa, California and Pattijo Fairbanks of Torrance, California; three grandchildren, Michael A. Leone of San Diego, California, Matthew T. Leone of Memphis, Tennessee and Leslie C. Murphy of Irvine, California; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Murphy of Irvine, California, Milan Leone of San Diego, California and Makenzie Leone of West Lafayette; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Zeke; one son, Jon Steven Alter; three sisters; and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at the Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer on Saturday, August 9, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Weston Cemetery in Rensselaer.
