Shirley C. (Carlberg) Wood, age 88, of Rensselaer passed away at the Jasper County Hospital on Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on March 9, 1923, she was the daughter of Theodore E. and Cecilia (O'Day) Carlberg. Shirley lived in both Elizabeth, NJ and Chicago before moving to Rensselaer in 1949.
A 1940 graduate of Batton High School in Elizabeth, NJ, she furthered her education at Pace Institute, New York, NY.
On Oct. 5, 1946, in Elizabeth, Shirley married Otto "Phil" Wood who survives.
A homemaker, Shirley was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer, the Prairie Arts Council, the Art League, the Bridge Club and was a 50-year member of Tri Kappa Sorority. During World War II Shirley was a volunteer with the American Red Cross.
Shirley is survived by her loving family, Phil Wood, Rensselaer, husband, Richard Phillips (Wendy) Wood, Sutton, AK, Son; Jeffrey (Dianna) Wood, Rensselaer, Son; Bruce K. (Sheila) Wood, Rensselaer, Son, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and her sister, Virginia Armknecht, Orchid Park, NY.
Friends will be received at the Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer from 2-7 p.m. Friday, May 20.
Private graveside services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Augustine Catholic School in Rensselaer.
