Josephine "Jo" Esther Gersdorff passed away in Loris Extended Care Center on May 8, 2013. She was born September 23, 1920 in Dover, Ohio, the oldest daughter of the late Clarence L. and Clara E. Schick.
Jo graduated from Dover High School in 1938 and received a BA degree from Flora Stone Mather College, Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1942.
During WWII Jo worked as a cryptanalyst for the Army Signal Corps (later became National Security Agency) in Washington, DC. Upon returning to Dover, she taught French and Spanish for 21 years. She relocated to the Myrtle Beach, SC area in 2011.
Jo is survived by her daughter Diane and son-in-law Ricky Shell of Little River, SC, a sister Mary Margaret (Gilbert) Rawlngs of Hilton Head Island, SC, and a granddaughter Sarah (Phillip) Newton of Charlotte, NC.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday May 11 at Lee Funeral Home.
Memorial gifts may be made to the "Dover High School Student Benefit Activity Fund", a fund set up to help students in financial need in Dover, Ohio.
