Thomas E. "Lovie" Birkhimer, 77, of Garden City, South Carolina, died Sunday, May 22, 2011, while in the company of his loving wife, Josette, and his "four legged girlfriend," Lulu, at Tidelands Community Hospice, Georgetown, South Carolina. Thomas was born February 18, 1934, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the son of the late August and Laura Birkhimer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward Birkhimer, Verle Birkhimer, Richard Birkhimer; and sister, Marylin Clemonson.
A 1952 graduate of Richland Senior High School, Johnstown, Pa; unable to find steady employment Thomas relocated to Silver Spring, Maryland. Thomas worked for the Washington, D.C. Metro system. Thomas began his career operating the electric trolley, moved on to driving bus and at the time of his retirement in 1993, he worked in the subway station. Thomas relocated to Surfside Beach, South Carolina after retiring. After moving south to keep busy he worked part time for Avis Car Rental, moving cars to and from various airports in South Carolina.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Josette, and his four legged girlfriend, Lulu. He is also survived by his daughter, Deborah Birkhimer, Johnstown, Pa.; sons, Patrice Leonhard and wife, Theresa, Glennwood, Md., David Birkhimer and wife, Vicki, Stoystown, Pa., Daniel Birkhimer and wife, Amy, Berlin, Pa. Thomas is survived by seven grandchildren, Stephen Birkhimer, Pittsburgh, Pa., Christopher Birkhimer, Arlington, Va., Matthew Birkhimer, Stoystown, Pa., Roger Leonhart, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Ross Leonhart, Glennwood, Md., Lindsay Birkhimer and Dana Birkhimer, Stoystown, Pa.
Thomas had a wonderful sense of humor, he kept his many friends and family laughing with his stories, he will be greatly missed.
Thomas requested that there be no viewing. A memorial service will be held for his family and his many friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 Fraiser Street, Georgetown, SC 29440.
