Oh my gosh, I will never forget him coming home early from New York and catching his son, Ward, with the Stroupe twins and myself skinny dipping in the creek behind his house. He could tell stories as well as write them and he kept us fascinated when he was home and us kids would gather at his home. This is on person who will be missed. I am a bit late coming here, but only just now found this site. Blessed be to all his children and loved ones.

For Mickey...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Ward and Kathy-
I haven't seen you guys since highschool in G'town.
I used to run into your Dad all the time after we moved to Surfside some years back. He was a great guy and always spent about 15 minutes talking to us. We're all gonna miss him.
I hope you two are doing well. I'd love to see you again.

I met Mickey as a child (10yrs old) I sat next to him at the Kingdom Hall. We were on vacation and had left our bibles at home so he shared his with me.I had no idea who he was until later.
But,I remember thinking he reminded me of Grandfather. He was such a kind man and I look foward to greeting him in the New system. Until then may he remain in Jehovah's memory.

I met Mickey and Jane one sunny Sunday afternoon on a dare. A friend and I had gone out for a few errands, and he bet that he could find the home of one of his favorite authors. I doubted him, so the bet was on. Well, he was right, and we carefully drove down Mickey's driveway, not intending on bothering them. But much to my surprise, Mickey was sitting out on his deck, and waved to us to stop. I was sure he was going to be very upset with us for bothering him, and I got out of my car with intense trepidation. When we introduced ourselves, our apologies were meet with great kindness and an invitation to stay and chat for a bit.

That afternoon was truly spellbinding! Like Mickey, I had been a pilot for years, and as we shared our love of flying and many other things, I fell in love - with his wit and charm, his laugh, and especially his stunning blue eyes. Before I knew it, we had talked the afternoon away, and Jane came out to remind him about a dinner engagement. We all chatted for a bit, and she is as lovely and gracious to strangers as Mickey.

I regret not visiting again, but I will always treasure that golden afternoon. My heart goes out to Jane and all of Mickey's family for their great loss. He will be missed by so many, not just for his delightful writing, but for being the splendid and complex man behind the pen.

I was born in Columbia S.Carolina in
1952, my father was a HUGE fan of you Mr. Spillane. Each summer we would go to Myrtle Beach and would
ALWAYS travel south to Murrel's Inlet to dine at Oliver's Lodge for
some fresh, prime 'Lo Country' sea-
food, I can recall like it was yes-
terday my dad would always point out
that "see right down that road.....
that's where Micky Spillane live."
May God Bless you and the family &
friends you left behind....And this
Thanksgiving as we head up U.S.17 to
my mom's house, I'll slow down and
look down that road and recall my
dear father's proud proclamation
"Micky Spillane lives right down that road..."

I've yet to find, over the years, the right words to say to someone who has lost someone close to them. What I've now come to understand, is that it's not the words, but the intent to offer comfort in some way that is so important.

Mickey and Jane were lucky enough to find something that many people search their whole lives for and never find. A partner that is a combination of your very best friend, an equal partner that is willing to give 80% when you are having a 20% day, loves you when you gain additional wrinkles, more grey hair and in this special relationship, listens to the same stories over and over.....and over again.

I am so glad that they had this relationship and got to share so many things together. I know that they loved each other so very much.

They opened their hearts and home to this "Yankee" girl and gave me a second family. I am very glad that they had such a rich and wonderful relationship. I was very lucky to have known both of them.

I am so saddened by his passing and yet still find myself chuckling when I remember some of those faces he used to make and those "off the cuff" comments. The joy he found in the simplest of gifts, be it a box of those Frosted Flakes or a little bag of orange-slices. What a wonderful and down to earth gentle man.

What a wonderful and special person Mr. Spillane was on earth and will be in Heaven. His way with people here on earth let's us know that he sent up his timber for his mansion in Heaven. We will all miss him here but if we mimic his way with people and love life and people the way he did, we will unite with him again. God's greatest commandment is LOVE. Mickey did LOVE all of his "fellow man" and this was evident. So friends and FAMILY, weep a little for him but let him go for now. Because God only reached down into His wonderful beautiful garden here in South Carolina and picked a handsome hearty flower (Mickey).

My deepest sympathies.

I grew up in Murrells Inlet, and as a child I remember sneaking into Mickey's yard, just to get a peak. Since that time I met Mickey several times, the last was when one of his "brothers", who was my partner at work (AFLAC), took me to meet him. Mickey welcomed me into his home and talked for quite some time. I enjoyed the visit more than I can express. He treated me as if I were family.

Mickey will be sorely missed by any and all who knew him and by anyone who know of him. We have lost an icon. Thank you, Mickey, for giving us so much of you to remember forever.

I had the privilege of knowing of Mickey for 30+ years as my family always vacationed in Surfside in the summer and would come down often throughout the years. Then my husband and I moved to Surfside in Sept. '04 and got to know Mickey personally for the year we spent there. He was such a class act and always had a smile for both of us, and he would usually regale us with a story from his past. We're both thinking of all of your family at this time, especially Lisa, whom we also had the chance to get to know through Mickey. We both look forward to seeing him again in the paradise earth that Jesus promised.

Condolences from Ultramar Fuel and Propane in Granville, NY. I only spoke to Mickey once on the phone. I was nervous at first, I let him run out of propane in the middle of winter. I do not believe I have ever met a more caring and giving person in my life. He was always willing to pitch in and do all he could.

When he spoke, it was with such passion that you actually felt as if you were there. He told me of his life's adventures and I realized that he actually did all the things some people say "someday". For Mickey, it was everyday. I will truly miss you and I know we will meet again. See ya later Frank!

I know that like most creators, he and his character, Mike Hammer were total and complete opposites. Hammer was shallow, overblown and often clueless and thoughtless, someone who probably gave the overwhelming scent of wood burning when he tried to analyse a situation, someone who wasted more bullets than breath, but I must say that I looked at Hammer as a caricature, a non-character, someone totally unlike any Private Investigator I ever knew. But that character, with all his idiocies gave me many hours of enjoyable reading and many laughs as well. I also enjoyed portrayals of him by Darren McGavin, Biff Elliot, Ralph Meeker and Mickey himself. The same can be said of the other P.I.s [Perennial Idiots in my terms], Doggeron Kelly and Tiger Mann. They will live, though their creator is gone. As a writer, nobody did it better. Requiescat in pace, Francis Morrison Spillane.

Mrs. Jane, I was sorry to hear about Mr. Mickey. I met him one day when I was doing security work at the beach and was headed home to Hemingway. I had stopped to get a soda and he was there at the gas station with his pickup. He asked me about my job and we must have talked for about 45 minutes, about anything and everything. Mr. Mickey was a down to earth guy. Mr. Mickey will be missed. My only regret is that I didn't have one of his books with me for him to autograph for me. He told me to come by sometime, but I seemed to always be in a hurry or didn't have time. May the Lord give you and the family comfort and strength for the days ahead. Again, thank you Mr. Mickey.

I worked at the old Red and White grocery store during high school in the early 60's. Mickey came in many times in white bermuda shorts, and was always so kind. My father had every Mike Hammer book, and treasured them. Mickey was kind enough to autograph a copy of two of his books for a man that worked for my father whlie we were living in Mexico...this man thought he had been given the Holy Grail! I ran into Mickey many years later, at a restaurant and told him how much the books had meant to this man, and thanked him again. He was so gracious. My thoughts and Prayers go out to Mickey's family esp. Mike whom I've known since school days in Myrtle Beach and the Theater.

I use to meet Mickey when I would sell SUN-NEWS PAPERS in Myrtle Beach every Thursday after school. I sold them for Faye Taylor Sun News person and I sold the papers for.10 a copy(back then it was a weekly) and I sold Mickey his every Thurday (rain or shine) he'd be waiting in his store close to Broadway Pool Hall. He'd give me a quarter and every time he'd say( keep the change Larry", this ment alot to me as I was 10-11 and here a man to me was big and mean looking yet he took the time to smile and say "thank you and keep the change Larry" just like he knew me personally. It wasn't til later I knew who he was and how nice spooken he was at least to me a 10 - 11 year old hustling papers and peanuts to make extra money.

I even ran errands for Mickey as well as other gentlemen alone Broadway Pool where I saw Mickey shooting pool with some of the Greats who came to visit Myrtle Beach.

Thank you MICKEY,,, and again my prayers go out to Mike and Jane and the rest of Mickeys family.

I was about 13 and living in Santa Maria, Calif., when the first Hammer novel appeared. I devoured it and all the others that followed. Spillane and Richard Prather (who wrote the 'Shell Scott' detective stories) may not have been teen role models, but in 1947 nobody knews what a 'role model' was anyway. These, Mickey especially, filled a great post-war void in popular literature.

On behalf of the American Red Cross Board of Directors, staff and myself, please accept our sincere and deepest sympathy at the loss of such a treasure to our community.

May God bless you as you work through your grief.

Jane and Family, Please know that I am so saddened to hear of Mickey's passing. I'll always remember when he would come to Oliver's Lodge, the first time I had to wait on him I was so nervous, I told Maxine to let another waitress take him, but she made me wait on him, he was such a pleasure to wait on, and other customers would get so excited, "Is that Mickey Spillane?" I recall one night a man I was waiting on spotted him and said to me "What does he drive(as he was looking out the windows)" I showed him the Ford truck, he got such a kick out of that. Well, Mickey you'll be greatly missed, and to all the family May God hold you in the palm of his hand and comfort you.

God bless the Spillane family. It's sad to see a good writer leave this earth. I enjoyed his work.

A legend is gone. But not his wonderful words. They will live on and on for all to read. He'll never be forgotten.

My sincere sympathy for the loss of your husband and father, "Mickey" Spillane. Two years ago as I waited to be interviewed on the local show, Southern Style, I was delighted to have the opportunity to listen to Jane and his interview, to get a sense of his personality. We were introduced as you were leaving, Jane, and I commented on the coincidence of his and my Dad's age and how good it was to see two men so engaged and active at that age, 86! Just that brief encounter impressed me and I can only imagine how blessed you all have been to have had such a person as husband, father and friend.

Jane,

Robbie and I read of Mickey's death yesterday morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. It brought back our many years together. I thought of the time you and I traveled Marion in the middle of night on foot doing God knows what. You may have forgotten that, but I never did. We are thinking of you.

When I worked at a popular Murrells Inlet restaurant 20+ years ago, the most commonly asked questions of visitors concerned Mickey Spillane. 'Do you know him? do you ever see him? what's he like? where does he live?' While I protected his address, I always told them 'yes, I often see him riding down the road in his white pickup...' or 'I see him at the grocery store. He's a nice guy.' They always responded with satisfied smiles that said to me 'yeah. I knew he was just like that.' You could say that Mickey put Murrells Inlet on the map, and he invested so much of himself in our community.

Murrells Inlet's "characters" will have soon all slipped away. Mickey, like the rest of them, will be missed but never forgotten.
