Hugh F. Masterson
Hugh F. Masterson, "Pops", 92, of Surfside Beach, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2014 surrounded by loved ones.
He was born in the Bronx section of New York, to his Irish immigrant parents, Patrick and Bridget. He was a WWII veteran and received a B.A. in Accounting from Fordham University in 1949 courtesy of the GI Bill. He married a Londoner, Jean Hathaway in 1963. He worked for Foster Wheeler Corporation for over 35 years before retiring to Surfside Beach in 1986. "Humble Hughie" understood the value of a dollar, was passionate about Notre Dame athletics, loved golf, enjoyed good wine, and could never resist chocolate. He was devoutly catholic, proud to be Irish, loved his family, enjoyed crosswords, and was a founding member of the Garden City McDonald's Coffee Club. He lived everyday to the fullest never once believing himself to be "old". He loved to laugh, tell a good story, still drove and had a full head of blonde hair at 92. He taught faith, forgiveness, and fiscal responsibility. He will be forever missed.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Jean and his five children, Kim, Nancy, Sean, Kelly and Megan. His is also survived by twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Garden City on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 10 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic High School Building Fund Campaign c/o St. Michaels Catholic Church.
