Geoffrey Murden Callahan, 71, of East Hartford, loving husband of Gloria (Fournier) Callahan, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, April 21, 2014 at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was born on December 18, 1942 in Hartford to the late Benjamin J. and Mary G. Callahan and lived most of his life in East Hartford. He was employed and a Partner of the Benjamin J. Callahan, Inc. of East Hartford for over 25 years.
Upon his retirement, he lived in Clinton at Harborview for a short while, and spent his winters for 15 years in Myrtle Beach, SC. He so loved being near the ocean. He was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary's Church, East Hartford and was currently a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church, East Hartford. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Rev. J.C. Martin Council #3901, East Hartford; a member of the former B.P.O.E. Lodge #2063, East Hartford and the Elks Club in Myrtle Beach, SC; and a member of the Moose Lodge in Surfside Beach, SC. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, and loved watching the UCONN basketball games (both Men's and Women's teams). Geoff also enjoyed fishing and vacationing in Maine and especially at Cape Cod, where he watched many beautiful sunsets over Rock Harbor in Orleans and Eastham, MA.
Besides his wife Gloria of 47 years, Geoff leaves to mourn for him two loving and very caring daughters, Maura Lee Callahan and Mary-Ellen H. Callahan, both of Glastonbury. He also leaves one brother, B. Patrick Callahan of East Hartford; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Geraldine and Emile Cyr of Manchester, Robert and Janet Fournier of East Hartford; several nieces, nephews, and many cousins and dear friends.
Geoff's family would like to extend their special thanks to the nurses and staff in the Critical Care Unit at Manchester Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care.
Funeral services will be Saturday (April 26th) with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church, May Road/Brandon Road, East Hartford. (Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church on Saturday morning.) Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, (Section R-2), Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the D'ESOPO-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford on Friday (April 25th) from 3-7 pm. As per Geoff's wishes, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Our Lady of Peace Church, 370 May Road, East Hartford, CT 06118 or to Paul Newman's "Hole in the Wall Gang Fund", 555 Long Wharf Drive, Dept.
