Phife Charles Ross
North Myrtle Beach
Phife Charles Ross, 88, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, died on August 6, 2014 after a long, healthy life and a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 12, 1926 in Kannapolis, NC, the son of Henry Grady Ross and Hama Castor Ross.
Ross was born in Kannapolis, NC and worked as an 'office boy' for Cannon Mills where he learned how to run tabulating machines, the pre-cursors of modern computers. In 1943, at age 17, he was selected for the Navy V-5 aviation program. At the end of the naval aviation program, he was asked to join the Army Machine Records Unit, where he completed his service in 1946.
Ross attended Duke University and Kings College, and became a Certified Public Accountant. He joined George G. Scott & Co. public accounting firm, and was named partner in 1958. In 1967, Ross joined Valdese Manufacturing Company, where he served as Treasurer and later, President, until 1979. He worked as CFO of Harriet and Henderson Yarns until his retirement in 1991.
Upon their retirement, the Rosses moved to North Myrtle Beach, SC, where Ross was an avid golfer. He got his first hole-in-one in 1995, followed by 5 more over the next 15 years. In 2001, at age 75, he 'beat his age' by carding a round of 74 at Beachwood Golf Course.
Ross was proud of his career and accomplishments, but more than anything he loved his family and the time they spent together. The family enjoyed many years of gatherings in North Myrtle Beach, with laughter, good food and great stories. The most recent family gathering took place July 24-29 of this year.
He is survived by a large and loving family: his wife, Hilda Edmiston Ross, daughter Kathy Ross Lane and husband David Lane of Advance, NC, daughter Karin Elaine Ross and partner, Heather Forbis of Statesville, NC, son Kevin Charles Ross and partner Karen Suttles of Morganton, NC, daughter Kelly Leigh Ross and husband Bill Whisenant of Chapel Hill, NC. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Jennifer Lane Moser (Wilmington, NC), Megan Elizabeth Lane, (Chicago, NC) Benjamin Ross Bedinger (Statesville, NC), Kristin Elaine Bedinger (New York, NY), Alison Ross Whisenant (Raleigh, NC) and William Ross Whisenant (Wilmington, NC). He is survived by 2 great-grandsons, Luke Patrick Moser and Jackson Ross Bedinger, cousins whom he pronounced 'brothers for life' a few weeks before his death. He is survived by his sister Graydene Ross Kidd and husband Hoke Kidd, nephew Tim Kidd and wife Janice Kidd.
The family wishes to thank all of the friends and neighbors who have been very supportive. And we wish to thank Mercy Care Hospice of Myrtle Beach.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, August 9 in Lee Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Care Hospice at 8216 Devon Ct, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572 or to the .
