Hugh David Singleton
Charleston
Hugh David Singleton, 49, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2013. A Celebration of David's Life will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013, in the Grace Episcopal Church, 98 Wentworth Street at 11:00 am. Interment will be held privately later. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 21, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
David was born July 15, 1964 in Conway, South Carolina, son of Ronald Singleton and Vivian Spencer Singleton. He graduated from The College of Charleston and went on to earn a Masters in Education from The University of South Carolina. He was an Event Logistics Coordinator with the Historic Charleston Foundation. David was a faithful member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, the oldest free Episcopal Church in America, where he served on the Vestry, and was a former Senior Warden, served as a Lay Reader and was a member of the Flower Guild. He was a gifted gardener and had a deep love of nature. David loved all of life, and was involved with the ASPCA, and the Wildlife Federation. In addition to his role at the Historic Charleston Foundation, he was the owner of EventSublime, Flowers and Events Planning. Locally, he has spoken and presented at The Charleston Fall Floral Show and multiple garden clubs, the Gibbes Museum's Ladies' Auxillary, and the Historic Charleston Foundation's Houses and Gardens Special Event Series. He was an exhibitor for various shows in the Gibbes Museum of Art, Operation Team Smile, and the Charleston Garden Show. His amazing sense of humor endeared him to all, and his passion for the history of Charleston and all things Lowcountry was always evident.
He is survived by his parents, Ronald and Vivian Singleton of Conway, SC; his sister, Jennifer Singleton and her partner, Robin Gibson of Cornelius, NC; and his brother, Greg Singleton of Springfield, VA. David is also survived by his nieces, Ashlee Singleton and her husband, Brennan Gilligan of Manassas, VA, and Wallis Singleton of Manassas, VA; and his beloved cats, Cindy and Boo Boo.
Memorials may be made in David's name to the Historic Charleston Foundation, 40 East Bay Street, Charleston, SC 29401.

David made me laugh at CofC when we were in APO in the '80s and he made me laugh the last time I saw him - which was not long ago. The news of his death has shocked me and my sincerest sympathies are with his family and close friends. I am very sure those in heaven with David are slapping their thighs and laughing with him now.

I am very new to Charleston and within a few weeks was asked to preach at St. Stephen's. After my sermon, David came up with such warm and welcoming comments I no longer felt a stranger. David lives on every time we too welcome the stranger, encourage the timid, and give joy to the sad...because that is what he did.

Sending love and strength to the Family of David Singleton. I met David as a student at the College Of Charleston and he helped me get through it all. I would not have successfully graduated had it not been for David's help. I was fortunate to reconnect with him a few years ago where I thanked him for his help. I was blessed to know him. May his friends and family find comfort in their memories. Peace and Love.
